FAQ: NDIS Provider Registration
How to become an NDIS provider?
To become a registered NDIS provider, you must apply to the NDIS Commission. Put simply, it is a 3-part process:
Step 1: Online application.
Applying is free, but keep in mind that there are costs associated with undertaking an audit (see the next section). You’ll be asked to supply a range of information about yourself, and your business, the types of supports you want to register for, and a self-assessment that describes how you meet the requirements of the NDIS Practice Standards.
Step 2: Undertake an Audit, Suitability Assessment and Approval
Once you submit your application, the NDIS Commission will issue a ‘Scope of Audit’ document, which confirms the type of audit required and the registration groups to be audited. You must arrange for an approved quality auditor to conduct the audit. Choose from the list of auditors published on the NDIS Commission website.
The type of audit you require depends on the registration groups you apply for. Verification Audits are light touch audits conducted offsite. Certification Audits require assessment against the Core Module (and any Supplementary Module) of the NDIS Practice Standards.
After the audit, the NDIS Commission reviews the report and assesses the suitability of key personnel to inform their approval decision.
Step 3: Quality Management System
Actually, this is Step 1, because you must have a Quality Management System before you can complete the first two steps. It’s important to get this right — your System will be with you for a long time! Quality Management Systems begin with policies and procedures, have processes to help staff implement the policies, and systems to check that they do. It makes sense to choose PQplus as your NDIS Quality and compliance support service. We’ve specialised in NDIS Quality and compliance from the start.

How much does it cost to become an NDIS provider?
Start-up costs include audit fees, insurances, and consulting fees (if you choose to register with the support of an NDIS consultant).
NDIS Consultant: Choosing the right business support services becomes more important as time goes by. A good NDIS Consultant does more than just policies and procedures. They make sure you understand the requirements, are supported through the registration and audit process, and have the experience to reliably answer your questions.
Audit Costs: Approved auditing companies set their own rates for audit fees — and you will find a large difference in fees. So, seek multiple quotes for your audit. Look for auditors who have experience in the disability sector — it is supposed to be a learning experience!
Insurances
All NDIS providers must have Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance. If you employ or contract staff, you will also need WorkCover. If you are a sole trader or partnership, you will need Personal Accident Insurance. Fees for insurance can vary based on the amount of income you expect to make.
How long does it take to become an NDIS provider?
Firstly, this depends on the availability of the auditing company. You may be able to book an audit within 4 weeks of submitting your online application, but often things take longer.
Secondly, once the audit is completed, the report is sent to the NDIS Commission for the final approval process. As at December 2024, you can expect to wait around 12 months for approval to be granted.
Is there an NDIS provider registration checklist?
Yes! We supply a free NDIS Provider Registration Checklist in our free publication — ‘3 Steps to NDIS Provider Registration: Start your NDIS business the right way’
