Things unregistered providers need to know: FAQs
I’m an unregistered NDIS Provider. Do I have to register?
You currently need to register as an NDIS provider if you want to provide:
- Specialist Behaviour Support (Practitioner) services
- Behaviour support implementation
- Specialist Disability Accommodation
From 1 July 2026, all unregistered SIL (Supported Independent Living) and Platform Providers will have to become registered NDIS providers.

What is the process to register as an NDIS provider?
The application process to become an NDIS provider has two main stages.
- The online application, which includes an organisational self-assessment against the NDIS Practice Standards.
- An audit to check that your business’ Quality Management System complies with the relevant Standards.
The NDIS Practice Standards is the main document used to assess compliance. It’s not a how-to manual. What does mandatory registration mean for unregistered SIL or platform providers (from 1 July 2026)?
- You must register from 1 July 2026. You must complete your application and book your audit by 1 October 2026.
If you continue to deliver services past 1 October 2026 as an unregistered SIL provider, large penalties apply. - New requirements for SIL providers being audited. Your audit will cover the Core Module and the new SIL Supplementary Module of the NDIS Practice Standards from 1 July 2026. You can find the draft SIL Supplementary Module here.

How much does it cost to register as an NDIS provider?
The main cost associated with NDIS provider registration is the audit fee. Approved audit companies range in cost. Audit fees are based on the size and scope of your audit —so you can expect with a higher number of staff and participants, your audit cost will be higher.
If you work with an NDIS Consultant, fees and quality of service will differ. Remember, registration and audits are not only about policy documentation. Work with a consultant who takes the time to understand your business and support a smooth transition through the registration process. Talk to PQplus about how we can help.
Lastly, you need to have appropriate insurances in place at the time of the audit. If you’re an experienced provider, you are likely already insured.
What NDIS requirements apply to my service?
The requirements for NDIS registration depend on whether you deliver low-risk or high-risk NDIS supports.
Low risk supports require a Verification audit against the NDIS Practice Standards (Verification Module).
For high risk supports, you will have to comply with the NDIS Practice Standards (Core Module) and any relevant Supplementary Module (for supports such as High Intensity Supports, Early Childhood Supports), and you will require a Certification audit. You will also have to comply with the NDIS Code of Conduct and other relevant legislation.

We work to keep systems that are working (and compliant) in place, as much as possible. Where your current system conflicts with the NDIS requirements we’ll suggest different ways of doing things.

You receive an NDIS Provider Number once you been approved as a registered provider.
